Naming of Organic Molecules
OK so the main focus of this section of the course outline is to be able to name the following types of organic molecules and recall the reactions they undergo:
Recall you need to be aware of the order of priority of the functional groups when naming and follow the IUPAC rules. The further along the reaction pathway, the higher the priority e.g. carboxyl functional group is a higher priority than a hydroxyl group
- straight chain and branched chain alkanes
- alkenes
- alkanoic acids (carboxylic acids)
- alcohols
- amines
- halogens
- esters
- ethers (in carbohydrates)
